A complementary and integrative healing program open to ALL Veterans! Learn how to heal from trauma and adversity using a variety of modalities including training YOUR service animal. P.A.W.S.S. has four (4) Certified Animal Behaviorists with a combined 20 years of service animal training (3 are military veterans and one a military spouse). We are one of the few if not only in the country to incorporate the family in ALL training and services.
McCall et al. (2020) found evidence for higher levels of resilience and companionship, and lower levels of anger, social isolation, and work impairment for the family members of Veterans with service animals. Husband et al. (2019) found Veterans with service animals stabilized or decreased their use of prescription medication. Service animals work!
Training is 6+ months and either Tuesday or Thursday for 2 hours based on class assignment. Classes begin with a relaxation exercise and end with an additional relaxation technique to assist students in developing mental resilience.
Training starts with basic obedience, grooming education, and getting to know your dog to foster a healthy relationship. The training program includes Canine Good Citizen, urban canine/public access, and individualized task training for each Veteran/service animal team based on the Veteran's need/disability.
We partner with local veterinarians, rescues, boarders, and groomers to accommodate different incomes, dog temperament/breed, and the geographic locations of students. Outside of weekly classes, Veterans are contacted on a regular basis by support team personnel and trainers. Veterans are encouraged to call, text, zoom, and engage outside of class hours with trainers, support staff, and classmates to build trust and fellowship.
